A Russian attack hit Kyiv early Saturday morning and killed four people in Shevchenkivskyi District, the head of the Ukrainian capital's military administration, Timur Tkachenko, reported.
Tkachenko, in a post on the Telegram messaging app, said that debris fell in the Holosiivskyi district on Kyiv's west bank and the Desnyanskyi district on the opposite side of the Dnipro River, which runs through the city.
In response to the attack, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that air defence systems were active across the city. The mayor confirmed shattered windows in the Shevchenkivskyi district, including damage to a metro station that had to be temporarily closed. Emergency services responded to smoke emanating from an apartment building, and repair crews were deployed to address a damaged water main.
Pictures published by the public broadcaster Suspilne on Telegram showed rescue workers operating among piles of shattered glass and rubble.
Authorities had earlier warned residents of an increased danger of strikes with the use of drones and missiles. The air raid alert that had lasted for more than an hour was lifted after the strike.
The strike highlights the continued dangers for Kyiv as tensions in the region rise.
